Most readers tend to be skeptical, even suspicious of information when its provided by a big corporation. However, we welcome and seek out advice from qualified persons who have our best interests at heart.
We typically seek out and also welcome advice from someone who has solved a problem that we’re struggling with. When writing copy we need to put on a friendly or highly qualified face on our copy. Avoid the impersonal approach. Let yourself become somewhat transparent, but not too much.
Speak to your audience. Talk to your reader as though they were right in front of you. Instead of talking about how “we” do something or how things happen to us, talk to the reader about his/her life … his/her future … and most importantly, his/her feelings.
Use the word “YOU” as often as you can without overdoing it. Your prospect doesn’t really care about you, your business, your product or anything else you have to offer. Your prospect is interested in how they can gain something for themselves by being associated with you! Great. We are in this business to become their friends and, possibly, business partners.
Another way of speaking to your audience is to talk about the reader. Yes, its true that x 90% of people who start an online business today will fail. By saying it this way, you are making it real…and you are not talking about him or her, but x many other people.
Find ways to personalize statistics: “As a woman over age 50, your chances are one in x of having a heart attack this year.” Goodness! Now, you’ve got my attention.
